What is a dance marathon? A dance marathon is an event where people commit to stay on their feet for a given length of time. Beginning as contests of dancing endurance in the 1920’s, dance marathons have since been adopted by many universities as a charity event. In today’s most popular form of the event, college students commit to standing on their feet for anywhere from 12 to 48 hours in benefit of Children’s Miracle Network, an organization that raises money for over 170 children’s hospitals around the country. Over the past 30 years, dance marathons across the country have raised over $100,000,000 for a number of children’s hospitals throughout the United States. What is DemonTHON? DemonTHON is DePaul University’s first student-run Dance Marathon. Started by three students with an urge to become true Vicentians in action, their vision has transformed into a reality with the help of 17 other students eager to do the same. On April 20, 2012, hundreds of DePaul students will stay on their feet for 24 hours in honor of the children and families right here in the Lincoln Park neighborhood at Children’s Memorial Hospital who struggle with the day to day hardships of serious illness. Who do we help? 100% of the money raised benefits Children’s Memorial Hospital, DePaul University’s next-door neighbor. The funds will be distributed to the area of greatest need, touching the lives of many children and families in our own community who are challenged daily by the reality of chronic illnesses, cancer, and birth defects to name only a few.
