The Illinois Science Council (“ISC”) is an independent 501(c)(3) organization. We are NOT a state entity, nor do we get any funding from the State of Illinois (we wish we did!). We simply exist in Illinois and believe in promoting the science and technology done in Illinois to the people of Illinois. We are run by volunteers. ISC was founded on the premise that understanding the scientific method and scientific discoveries is crucial to a well-rounded civic life. But also because science and technology is just really interesting stuff! We produce public programs that bring scientists and engineers together with adults to cultivate our innate curiosity. We strive to create engaging programs to appeal to an audience with many other options for their spare time. ISC serves as the adult counterpart to the existing science-outreach organizations that focus exclusively on K-12 students. In the humanities, there are countless organizations that present art, music, theater, dance, etc. to the adult public. ISC is the only organization that does so for science and technology for adult audiences that are not part of the science community, i.e., the “lay” public. ISC presents talks, films, panel discussions and demonstrations designed to bring science to the layperson. Our programs are open to the public and offered free of charge or at very low cost. We promote all areas of science – from astronomy to zoology and everything in between. Our focus is on the hard sciences, and although we may include social sciences, we stay far away from any form of pseudo-science. Because Chicago is home to an extraordinary number of science institutions, our efforts highlight the work of area experts.
