www.studentsinaction.org/where-we-are/chicago The Jefferson Awards for Public Service is a national 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, established in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert Taft Jr., and Sam Beard, to create a Nobel Prize for public service. National winners are the “Who’s Who” of American History makers – people such as: Lance Armstrong, Colin Powell, Barbara Bush, Oprah Winfrey, Alan Greenspan, and Bob Hope. In addition, the Jefferson Awards are led by an impressive and accomplished Board of Selectors. Yet, truly the most celebrated, exceptional winners and participants are the thousands of local “unsung heroes” – ordinary people, doing extraordinary things, who are honored for their contributions. The mission of the Jefferson Awards is to recognize those who perform exemplary service and by doing so, inspire others. Recently, the Jefferson Awards has partnered with corporations and organizations to launch Students in Action across the nation, Chicago having been a pilot city. The lofty mission is to double volunteering in American high schools and to build lifelong habits around service, leadership and ethics in an effort to retain and expand upon America’s greatest tradition and highest calling: public and community service. We are currently in over 40 Chicagoland (suburban and city) schools and continue to grow and expand. All of our programs are offered at no cost to participating schools.
